Raising Awareness of Salt Flats
The latest in my long list of Jose Mier names, coming in at around number 45, this one Jose de Mier from the Cadiz area of Spain–several thousand miles from my home in Sun Valley, CA. In fact this Jose was the former mayor of Chiclana in that area. Full name: Jose de Mier Guerra.
I happened upon this Jose in another straight Google search. The listing was in Spanish but I’m grateful to Google that they allow me to immediately translate the page. In this case it was a report from Diario de Cadiz, which is a daily newspaper in Spain. The subject of the article is not going to have anybody dancing up and down and excitement. Rather it’s a story about how this Jose de Mier was about to publish a book on the production of salt in the importance of the nearby Chiclana Salt flats near Cadiz. I know next to nothing about Spain, its regions and things that are important to its economy, however, apparently the Chiclana Salt flats have been very important to the economy of this region of Spain and have gone underappreciated by many. Apparently this is the reasoning behind the book by my latest Jose Mier, to draw attention to the salt flats and the effect it has had on the local economy.
As De Mier states:
“Within the books of the economic geography of the production of salt in the Bay of Cádiz, they always located its obtaining in San Fernando, Puerto Real and Puerto de Santa María, it annoyed and pissed me that the Chiclana salt flats did not appear; I, in pencil, added to the text: and Chiclana … “
Regardless of the importance of the salt flats mentioned I am gratified to find another Jose to add to my list and I welcome this former mayor of Chiclana. By the way, it’s interesting to note another Spaniard with the nobiliary particle in his name!
