Mentioned in 1853 Explorer’s Book
My latest Jose Mier search leads me to Peru in the 1850s. In the course of doing a search on Google for–what else?–Jose Mier, I came across an excerpt from a book on Google books. The book in question was a record of the exploration of the valley of Amazon which was done in the 1850s by a couple lieutenants in the United States Navy.
I never knew about such an exploration but now I do. It seems like the United States Navy certainly got around in those days. And, during this exploration they visited the home of one of the sub-prefects province in which they were staying. That person’s name just happened to be Jose Mier. Specifically Jose Mier y Teran.
What’s interesting about this is that the surname Mier y Teran is very popular in Central and South America. I have run across many different people with this surname and some of them are on my list. There is one doctor with that name on my list and you can find that blog post here about Jose Mier Y Teran in Florida.
Aside from my name search this looks like a fairly interesting book. The United States still a very young country at the time of the expedition and yet we were sending people all over the world to explore and find out about these as yet unknown areas in our hemisphere. If you’re into history and South American exploration is might be an interesting book to read. Regardless, this is yet one more Jose Mier that I can add to my list.
